Local realtor, art enthusiast and philanthropist Morgan King has always been a supporter of the Walkers', collecting Philip's art as well as sporting fine jewelry by his wife Elizabeth. It was just another day in the office for him as he worked on the mural that welcomes you into her home.
Philips work schedule timed out perfectly, as the mural was finished just days before the donor party Morgan was to host for all the sponsors of the Mayport Mural Project, which Philip is a part of.
This deadline was crucial to meet, as it was the official reveal of the mural which will also represent the plans Philip has for the Mayport walls. This mural, being the first of its kind featuring the tropical plant images, is extremely unique to Philip's traditional pieces, and he's looking forward to doing more like this in the future.
The idea of bold statement art that's both representative of Florida and cohesive with its surroundings, whether in a home or side of a busy office building, is what makes this piece of art so special.
With little Elizabeth Taylor (Morgan’s pup) to greet the team everyday and keep us entertained with her silliness, this project was as rewarding as it was a new challenge for Philip to take on.
Philip and Elizabeth tag teamed this project, and once they get to work there's no stopping them until the finished product is perfected.
Part of the challenge of this mural was the new materials Philip had to work with - and I'm not talking about paint.
To complete the piece, Philip needed a large extension ladder and scaffolding, as the mural was on the wall across from the stairs leading to the second story. Thankfully, Philip's pretty handy and after a few setbacks with the rental company, was able to set up the scaffolding in Morgans foyer and get to work.
While it was pretty bad ass to witness, painting while suspended two stories up was definitely new for Philip and Elizabeth. They certainly reached a new level of dedication and commitment all in the name of art.
The projects that sparked the idea for this mural are brand new to the city of Atlantic Beach and Mayport, and Philip is so grateful to be on board with Jessica Santiago and the Art Republic team.
These palms and designs will be featured along Mayport Road with The Mayport Mural Project. This initiative will consist of 15 murals by local and regional artists, and will revitalize and beautify the area. Follow along our blogs and social media to see when this project will take place and where to check out Philip's part in this!
